Job Hunting Online 101

  1. Keep personal data secret. Critical information such as your birthday, age, driver’s license number, address, marital status and social security number should all be kept private and off your online resume.  This information should never be given to a potential employer on a preliminary application, even if they say they need it to perform a background check on you. Those who ask could be fishing for information to be used for identity theft
  2. Trust your gut. If you see a job posting that sounds too good to be true, it might be a scam. Research the company name  online. Type the company name into a search engine with the word “scam” after it to see if anybody else has reported them.
  3. Be wary of fees. No Human Resources manager or recruiting professional will ever ask for cash or credit card information, so if you get a request for money, you’re most likely communicating with a scammer. Remember that no legitimate company will ask for money prior to interveiw. Jobcentralasia will also NEVER collect fees for any of its services, either to employers or jobseekers. If someone represents himself as us, and demands for fees, report it immediately.
  4. Check privacy terms. If you are thinking about posting your resume online, make sure the site has a clear privacy policy.  If you learn that they share your information with third parties, you could be making yourself vulnerable.
  5. Shield your identity. Consider replacing your name on your resume with a generic term like “Experienced Business Development Manager.”  You may also want to keep your current employer’s name and location hidden as well.
  6. Use a disposable email address  for job hunting. Create a unique and appropriate email address just for your online job search that does not contain any identifiable information. In addition to protecting your identity, this will allow you to easily manage spam mail.
  7. Safeguard your references. There is no need to include your references’ names and contact information on your resume. Writing the phrase “References available upon request” is sufficient and will keep your references out of harm’s way. They’ll thank you later.
